Married since 1984, Tom and Lynda share a deep-rooted passion for the arts. Tom carries on a rich family legacy of ceramic excellence. He follows in the footsteps of his aunt, acclaimed Fayetteville, NC potter Nellie Allen Smith, his mother Shirley, a porcelain doll maker, and his sister Mary, an active North Carolina potter trained at Seagrove, NC. While Tom proved to be a natural on the wheel during his first community class in 2012 at the Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts in Gatlinburg, he found his calm demeanor perfectly suited him for throwing!
Lynda’s journey took a different path. Though Lynda spent years in Arrowmont’s wheel classes, her instructors and peers soon realized her true calling lay elsewhere. Her passion ignited at the slab roller and hand-building table, where she could focus on intricate textures and structural design.
The “Clay Couple” concept was born the moment they began attending classes together. By merging their individual strengths—Tom’s skill on the wheel and Lynda’s eye for hand-built details and surface design—they began collaborating on one-of-a-kind pieces. Today, their work reflects a shared love for each other and the versatile medium of clay. This site is a dedicated space to share those collaborative creations with you.
